About the Department
Seed Technology

Seed represents the most important product of plant life cycle. Human beings have long recognition for the essential role of seeds in crop establishment and improvement. Seed production technology and other activities related to the seed is highly technical and exacting task. It calls for high level management and technically sound organization/human resource. The scientific production, processing, storage, distribution and maintenance of essential seed quality attributes at all stages of seed multiplication are activities which are included in the broad discipline of SEED TECHNOLOGY.

Importance

Seed technology teaches students the scientific principles of crop production, genetics, processing and marketing. it acts as a foundational model that teaches resource management, continuous development, and the replication of knowledge. The course in the seed technology at under-graduate level is intended to develop the skills of the students and prepare them for their career development in this new area of specialization for both private and public sector and options for self employment too.

Infrastructural Facilities

The Department has one fully equipped laboratory, one Field Experimental Station (for conducting field experiments) of about 2 kanals of land and one staff room.

Objectives

The main objective of a Seed Technology course is to equip students with the scientific principles and practical skills required to produce, process, and distribute high-quality, certified seeds. It bridges agricultural theory and industry demands by focusing on crop improvement and maintaining varietal purity.

The course curriculum is generally broken down into the following key objectives:

  • Rapid Multiplication: To learn how to rapidly increase the population of superior, high-yielding crop varieties so they can be distributed to farmers as quickly as possible.
  • Assured Quality & Vigor: To teach methods for maintaining physical, physiological, and genetic purity. Students learn to evaluate seed vigor, viability, and health through laboratory testing.
  • Production & Processing Techniques: To impart competence in planning and managing seed crops, and executing processing techniques such as drying, cleaning, and seed treatment.
  • Seed Legislation & Certification: To build a working knowledge of seed certification standards, field inspections, and legal frameworks (such as the Seeds Act).
  • Skill Development & Entrepreneurship: To prepare students for careers in the commercial seed industry or self-employment by teaching aspects of seed storage and marketing.
Scope

Seed technology is the applied science of improving the genetic and physical characteristics of seeds. As a course, its primary goal is to maximize agricultural production by ensuring the rapid multiplication, timely supply, and quality assurance of high-yielding crop varieties at reasonable prices.

The scope of the course encompasses everything from variety development to commercial marketing:

  • Quality Seed Production: Learning agronomic and genetic principles to grow, harvest, and multiply nucleus, breeder, foundation, and certified seeds.
  • Seed Processing & Storage: Techniques in drying, cleaning, grading, treating, and packaging to maintain seed vigor, prevent deterioration, and protect against pests.
  • Seed Testing & Certification: Analyzing seeds for moisture, germination rates, genetic purity, and health. It also covers state and national seed acts and legal standards.
  • Crop Improvement: Integrating plant genetics, hybrid development, and biotechnological methods to create climate-resilient and disease-resistant crops.

Studying seed technology opens up diverse, lucrative career opportunities in the rapidly growing agricultural sector.

Typical career paths include:

  • Seed Production Manager overseeing commercial crop generation
  • Seed Certification Officer in state or central agricultural departments
  • Quality Assurance Analyst in private biotech or agribusiness companies
  • Plant Breeder or Agronomist in research institutes
  • Agri-entrepreneur, such as running a private seed company, distribution network, or "seed village" enterprise.
