Government Degree College (GDC) Anantnag has long been recognized as one of the premier institutions in the Kashmir Valley for excellence in games and sports. The College has consistently excelled in promoting sports through active participation, outstanding performances, and remarkable achievements at inter-college, university, state, and national levels. The Department of Physical Education, established in 1960, has been the driving force behind this success by providing modern sports infrastructure, quality equipment, professional guidance, and a supportive environment that enables students to realize their sporting potential. Backed by a rich tradition of excellence and a commitment to holistic development, the Department continues to inspire students to pursue sports with dedication, discipline, and a spirit of healthy competition.
The College has a spacious, well-maintained, and fully fenced sports complex comprising a cricket ground, football ground, hockey ground, two volleyball courts, two lawn tennis courts, and a dedicated cricket practice net. The playground is supported by a reliable drinking water facility and is regularly maintained using three lawn mowers, a ride-on mower, a one-ton motorized pitch roller, and a half-ton manual roller to ensure excellent playing conditions throughout the year.
The Department is well-equipped to organize and conduct a wide range of sporting events, with facilities including cricket sight screens, practice mats, boundary ropes, football and hockey goalposts and nets, along with quality sports equipment such as bats, balls, rackets, protective gear, and sports uniforms.
To promote fitness and healthy competition, the College organizes the Annual Road Race and Cycle Race every year, attracting enthusiastic participation from students. The Department is equipped with racing bicycles, safety helmets, pumps, sports uniforms, and participant numbering tags to facilitate these events.
The College also provides excellent indoor sports facilities, including a modern gymnasium and fitness centre with weight-training equipment, treadmills, and stationary bicycles. Dedicated spaces are available for table tennis, chess, carrom, and yoga, offering students diverse opportunities for fitness and recreation.
To encourage adventure sports, the Department maintains a comprehensive inventory of trekking, camping, and skiing equipment, including waterproof tents, sleeping bags, insulated mats, jungle boots, and skiing gear. Student safety is accorded the highest priority through the availability of portable first-aid kits, ice-pack storage facilities, and support from the College Dispensary.
As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen sports infrastructure, the College has earmarked land for the construction of an Indoor Badminton Hall and a Basketball Court, reaffirming its commitment to expanding sporting opportunities and fostering all-round student development.
