The study of Music encompasses a rich and diverse range of traditions, including Indian Classical Music, Vocal and Instrumental Music, Folk Music, Sufiana Music, and the musical heritage of Jammu and Kashmir.

Since its establishment, the Department of Music has been committed to nurturing musical talent and providing students with opportunities to develop their knowledge, creativity, performance skills, and appreciation of our rich cultural heritage. The department aims to provide quality education through a balanced approach to theory, practical training, performance, research, and skill development.

The primary objective of the department is to equip students with a strong foundation in music while encouraging them to explore new dimensions of creativity and applied research. Special emphasis is laid on vocal and instrumental training, voice culture, knowledge of Ragas and Talas, stage performance, music technology, traditional musical practices, and the preservation and documentation of the musical heritage of Jammu and Kashmir.

In the years ahead, the department intends to introduce and promote more subject-specific, skill-based, and career-oriented courses that respond to the changing needs of the contemporary music industry. These initiatives will provide students with opportunities to develop professional skills in performance, teaching, music production, composition, research, cultural documentation, event management, and other emerging areas of the field. Under the NEP-oriented undergraduate structure, the Music Department can support:

The Department of Music of Shaheed Himayun Muzzamil Memorial Government Degree College Boys, Anantnag, has been functioning since the establishment of the Department in 2022–23. The Department is equipped with dedicated academic and practical spaces to facilitate the teaching and learning of both theoretical and practical aspects of Indian Music. The available infrastructure supports Major, Minor, Multidisciplinary (MD), and Skill Enhancement/Skill-based courses in Music.

The Department has dedicated space for conducting lectures, vocal and instrumental practical classes, demonstrations, individual practice, and other academic activities. The infrastructure is being progressively strengthened in accordance with the increasing academic requirements and student enrolment.

Music Practical Facilities

Practical training forms an essential component of the Music curriculum. The Department provides facilities for conducting practical classes in Vocal Music and Instrumental Music, including training in Hindustani Classical Music, Raga, Tala, Sargam, Voice Culture, Harmonium, and other prescribed practical components.

The Department possesses musical instruments and teaching aids required for the smooth conduct of practical classes. These facilities enable students to develop their vocal skills, rhythmic understanding, knowledge of raga, stage performance abilities, and instrumental proficiency through regular practice and demonstration.

Harmonium Skill Laboratory

A dedicated Harmonium Skill facility is available for practical training under the skill-based component of the curriculum. Students are provided opportunities to acquire hands-on knowledge of harmonium, including basic fingering techniques, scale practice, alankars, sargam, raga-based exercises, accompaniment techniques, and practical performance skills.

The facility is particularly useful for developing the accompaniment skills of students and strengthening their understanding of melody, pitch, rhythm, and raga.

Departmental Academic Facilities

The Department also utilizes its available classroom and practical spaces for:

4. Performance at SKICC: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, students of the Department of Music performed at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), Srinagar, representing the college in a significant cultural programme.
