The Department of English established in 1950 is one of the premiere departments of Government Degree College Anantnag. The department has an honour to cater the academic aspirations of B. A. (Honours) English students and a large number of General English and Communicative English students.
The department acts as an important processor of producing quality human science in the field. It addresses the core issue of employment in the field of education, international relations like diplomacy, governance, psephology, civil society, law, comparative politics and so on.

Islamic studies is an integrated academic discipline that aims at the study of Revealed Sources of knowledge (Quran and Sunnah). It explores Islam as a religion, history, culture and civilization.
Urdu subject exists at the very inception of the college since 1951 and taught as a subject in arts stream and is still taught as a subject in the stream. The full-fledged department has not been established yet. The department has an aim to make Urdu learners fluent Urdu speakers and has put hold on urdu language and literature.

Kashmiri Department has been established in (1984). The department has remained focus of activities with regard to the development of Kashmiri language. The teaching program of the department is designed to provide students, the knowledge of Kashmiri language and literature.
Persian language has remained official language of Jammu and Kashmir state for about six centuries. During this period it has influenced the culture, art and the regional languages of the state to a great extent.
History as a discipline is considerably important as it not only makes people wise but at the same time enables one to know who he/she is. Its importance over the years has increased enormously as in most of the state or central competitive exams its weightage in terms of marks or overweight’s other subjects.
